Boutlier warns about creating a dull space since there won't be a variety of colors other interiors have. The monochrome trend encourages people to take a deep dive into the various tones and textures within a single color. The variety of blues in this world is immense, but that doesn’t mean you have to decorate with everything from aqua to navy. Instead, you can start with royal blue and venture out a couple of shades.

Monochromatic spaces often feel restful and nurturing, perfect for right now. They can also be bold and make quite a statement, but they are easier to do than rooms with two colours or more. To avoid monotony (meaning one tone) use darker and lighter shades of the same colour as well as pattern and texture. And then there's this ultra-modern take by Studio Razavi, which punctuates white pieces with icy metallic accents. Mint green and teal steal the show in Sean Scherer's antique-filled living room. "We have six months of winter up here," he says, of his Upstate New York home, and "bright colors are a way to warm up your spirit." This color scheme does the trick. Everything in this soothing sitting room designed by Barry Dixon is cast in a heavenly glow, thanks to the soft sky blue paint color.
